“I Didn’t Think I Could Look Like That”
Why So Many Professionals Avoid Having Their Photos Taken
“I didn’t think I could look like that.”
I hear this a lot after personal brand photography shoots, and not because my clients suddenly transform into different people, but because most people have spent years being far too critical of themselves in photos.
Most of the clients I work with aren’t models or influencers. They’re founders, consultants, doctors, creatives, coaches, and business owners, people doing meaningful work whilst juggling a hundred other responsibilities at the same time. They’re often the face of their business, yet the last thing they want to do is stand in front of a camera.
Many arrive at their business portrait session saying things like:“I’m awkward in photos”, “I never like pictures of myself”, “I have no idea what to do.”
And honestly, that’s completely normal! One of the biggest misconceptions about professional headshots and personal branding photography is that you need to already feel confident in front of the camera before booking a shoot. In reality, confidence usually comes afterwards.
A huge part of my job as a personal branding photographer isn’t just taking photographs. It’s helping people feel comfortable enough to relax into being themselves.
No stiff posing, or pressure to perform.
Just calm guidance, thoughtful planning, good conversation, and creating an environment where you feel genuinely at ease.
That’s why my personal brand photography sessions are designed to feel relaxed, supportive, and well guided, especially for professionals who don’t naturally enjoy being photographed, because when that shift happens, something changes. You stop focusing on how uncomfortable you feel and start seeing yourself the way other people already see you! Professional, Capable, credible, warm, confident, and experienced. And the photos reflect that too.
The best feedback for me is never simply: “These look nice.” It’s when someone says: “I finally feel proud to share my photos.”Or: “I actually feel like these look like me.”
Honestly, seeing that shift in someone is one of the most rewarding parts of my work! That’s the difference between simply taking photos and creating personal brand imagery that genuinely represents who you are, what you do, and the level you work at.
Whether the images are being used for your website, LinkedIn profile, press features, speaking opportunities, or social media, professional photography should help you feel proud and confident in how you present yourself online.
If you’ve been putting off booking a business portrait or personal brand photography session because you feel awkward or unsure in front of the camera, I promise you’re not alone. And you don’t have to figure it out by yourself.
If you’re looking for personal brand photography in Manchester or Cheshire, I’d love to help you create natural, polished imagery that genuinely feels like you.
